In order to understand interpersonal dynamics, in teams and organizations, we need to discern the basic motivation that causes the thoughts and behaviors of individuals. Everybody is motivated, but not by the same things. Many of the conflicts, misunderstandings and tensions that arise in organizations come from the expectation that other people have the same motivation and values as us. However, this is not the case in most organizations. On the other hand, we don’t even need to have the same values, as people with very different values can work together quite successfully, as long as there is a general agreement on direction and a clear common goal.

In organizations, 6 different types of values that motivate people can be identified. Spiral dynamics defines these value systems as well as their interaction with living conditions. Each system defines a different culture in the organization, and values determine what drives employee behavior.
